SWYN Y COED / July 2011

Woods enchant young imaginations

Frân Wen ventures into the forest to present a public performance of its new production Swyn y Coed-The Enchanted Forest.

Abergwyngregyn Woods, Conwy (Sat 2 July), Newborough Forest, Newborough (Thur 21 July) and Glynllifon Park, Caernarfon (Fri 22 July) will play host to this enchanting outdoor theatre experience for families and children aged 7 years+.

The show is being supported by the Forestry Education Initiative, coinciding with the United Nations International Year of the Forest, and is set to be a unique and magical theatre experience, looking to ignite young people’s imagination.

Kim Burnham of Forestry Education Initiative said, “The aim is for children to be taken away from the classroom and TV environment and take advantage of the beauty and excitement of the outdoors, encouraging them to use their imaginations. Taking children out of the indoors environment means they can experience nature close-up, but using theatre to bring these experiences to life is something new and exciting.”

The production is made up of Welsh actors Emyr Gibson, Elen Gwynne, Huw Llŷr and Manon Vaughan Wilkinson. Menai Bridge-based Emyr Gibson, best known for his role in S4C’s ‘Rownd a Rownd’ adds: “The story is based on the Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed tale from the Mabinogion and tells of the courting and marriage of Pwyll and Rhiannon and of the birth and disappearance of their son Pryderi. Performing theatre in the open air is a fantastic and exhilarating experience. Being so close to the audience makes it a much more intimate and engaging experience, the children looked amazed at times.”
